How is this different from just using my state's DMV website?

Your DMV site checks availability just fine. What it does not do is help you think of something worth checking. That's the gap we fill. You bring a theme (your dog's name, your profession, a terrible pun you've been sitting on for years) and we generate a whole set of clever candidates, filter out the ones that break your state's rules, and surface only the plates that are actually available. One loop instead of two.

Is availability information actually real-time?

It depends on your state, and we tell you exactly which situation you're in. States fall into three tiers. Tier 1 states get a live check against the DMV's own system, with a timestamp showing exactly when we last checked. Tier 2 states get full idea generation plus a direct link to the DMV pre-filled with your candidate, so you do the final click yourself. Tier 3 states get idea generation plus a link to the DMV site. Every result shows its tier and its timestamp. We never dress up a cached result as if it just came off the wire.

What does 'last checked' mean, and why does it matter?

Vanity plates get claimed and released constantly. A plate that was available last Tuesday might be gone today. We show a 'last checked' timestamp on every Tier 1 result so you know exactly how fresh that data is. If a result is hours old, we'll tell you. If it's stale enough to matter, we flag it. The DMV is always the source of truth. We're the fast shortlist; they're the official answer.

What are the three tiers, and which tier is my state?

Tier 1 (Live check): we query the state's system automatically and show real availability. Tier 2 (Generate and guided verify): we generate ideas and apply your state's rules, then drop you onto the state's own checker with the plate pre-filled where possible. Tier 3 (Generate only): we generate ideas, tell you the rules, and link you to your DMV. Every state in the U.S. (all 50 plus DC) is on the site from day one at Tier 3 or better. How accurate is the availability data?

For Tier 1 states, we query the same system your DMV uses, so the data is as fresh as our last check. That said, another person could claim a plate between when we check and when you submit your application. We always say this clearly: our results are indicative, not guaranteed. The DMV application is the only moment that locks a plate to your name. Think of us as a very well-informed scout, not a reservation system.

How does AvailablePlates generate plate ideas?

You give us a theme, a state, and optionally a style (punny, literal, cryptic, referential, and so on). We run that through an AI generation step that returns structured ideas with a short rationale for each. Then our own code filters the results hard: character limits, allowed characters, state-specific rules. The model is creative; the rules enforcement is deterministic. Whatever makes it through the filter is a plate that could actually exist in your state.

What are the character rules for vanity plates?

Every state sets its own rules, which is part of why this is complicated. Most states allow 2 to 7 characters, letters and numbers only, no spaces or symbols. Some states allow hyphens or spaces on specific plate types. A handful let you swap the letter O for a zero to make it look like text (like ST0NKS). Our generator applies your state's specific rules before showing you any results, so if a plate appears in your list, it's at least structurally valid for that state. What if the plate I want is already taken?

Add it to your watchlist. We monitor Tier 1 plates on your list and send you an email the moment one becomes available again. Plates do get released: people move, let registrations lapse, or upgrade to something even punchier. Free accounts can watch a few plates. Paid accounts get more watches and faster checks. If a plate you love is currently taken, the watchlist is the move.

How does the watchlist and alert system work?

Save any plate to your watchlist from the results page. For Tier 1 states, we check watched plates on a regular schedule and email you when status changes. Free accounts get a handful of watches. A paid subscription unlocks more watched plates and more frequent checks. You set it and forget it; we do the refreshing.

Does AvailablePlates cost money?

Accepted Answer

Generating ideas and checking availability is free to try. The watchlist has a free tier (a few watched plates) and a paid tier for people who are serious about snagging a specific plate or tracking several at once. Paid plans run in the range of $9 to $19 per month depending on the tier. Merch (plate frames, decals) is a one-time purchase. No subscription required for that.

Can I put my plate on a frame or decal?

Yes, and honestly this is the fun part. When you find a plate you love, you can order a matching plate frame or decal right from the results page. It's print-on-demand, so there's no minimum order and nothing sitting in a warehouse. A great plate deserves a great frame. (And if the plate itself gets claimed before you can register it, at least you have the frame as a monument to the idea.)

How do I know AvailablePlates is not just making up availability data?

Accepted Answer

Every Tier 1 result shows the source tier label and a timestamp. We do not show Tier 1 results for states we cannot actually check. If a state is Tier 2 or Tier 3, we say so plainly and send you to the DMV for the definitive answer. We built the honesty model deliberately because competitors show stale data as if it were real-time, and we think that is a bad trade for the user. You can always verify any result directly on your state's DMV site. We encourage it.

What if my state is not in Tier 1 yet?

Every state gets idea generation and state-specific rules from day one. Tier 1 (live checking) is rolling out state by state as we verify each DMV system is scriptable and that automating it is within bounds. Check your state's page to see its current tier and whether an upgrade is planned. If your state is stuck in Tier 2 or 3 and you're itching for a live check, the state page will walk you through the fastest manual path.

Does AvailablePlates work for specialty or vanity plate types (veterans, collegiate, custom backgrounds)?

Accepted Answer

The generator works for standard vanity plates across all states. Specialty plate types (collegiate, military, themed backgrounds) have their own availability pools and sometimes different character rules. Where states provide a separate checker for specialty plates, we link to it from the state page. Specialty plate generation is on the roadmap; standard plates are the launch focus.

Is my search data private?

Accepted Answer

We log the themes you search and the results we generate so we can improve the product. That data is not sold, not shared with third parties, and not used to market to you.
